If you have not yet gotten yours, I think they are still running the promo to give free moo cards for first 200000 people. The cards are automatically built from your Facebook cover pictures and profile data.

Mini day trip to Tijuana, Mexico

Today is Thanksgiving in the USA. Most shops, restaurants and commerces are closed down. As I am only 1/2 hour to the border to Mexico where thanksgiving is not celebrated and all commerces open. So just walked through the border. There is no check at all to get into Mexico. Anyone can get in without papers on foot and only when coming back to the sates that immigration is checked again.

Day of the dead - Dia de los Muertos 2011 - San Francisco

Dia de los Muertos is celebrated mostly in Mexico to honor the souls of the departed and as a ritual to mock death. The people from which this ritual started viewed death as the continuation of life. Instead of fearing death, they embraced it. To them, life was a dream and only in death did they become truly awake.

In rural Mexico, people visit the cemetery where their loved ones are buried. They decorate gravesites with marigold flowers and candles. They bring toys for dead children and bottles of tequila to adults. They sit on picnic blankets next to gravesites and eat the favorite food of their loved ones.
In San Francisco, it is celebrated with a procession in the mission district with most people dressed up and face painted [The most common design for Dia de los Muertos (day of the dead), is to paint the face to resemble a skull. The skull has a uniquely positive meaning in Dia de los Muertos, very different from the skeletons and ghosts of Halloween.] and make altars to honor the people that they lost in their lifes.

Le Dîner à San Francisco - White Outdoors Diner in the city

This is a French tradition that they have been having in France for years - everybody dress in white and bring their food and have a nice chic dinner in the outdoors. This year they had this event for the first time in San Francisco (https://www.facebook.com/ledinerasanfrancisco). We managed to get tickets and attend it.

They had very limited tickets to the event. I somehow managed to get in the first batch of tickets they issued. Each table host was allowed to have 3 guests. I asked two friends to join my table and eventually these two also got tickets.

So, we were able to get 12 seats and another two tables of 8 friends wanted to sit with us. So we had a huge community table of 20 people, all dressed in white, with ample drinks, food and great company.

While we were 20, each group of 4 had brought all silverware, cutlery, food, drinks, candles etc.. for their own little mini group, but we all still shared with each of the groups.

I cooked a french quiche with zuchini, chicken and thyme, then a chicken salad with mayo and parsley to eat with French Bread.

Weather was super colaborative and it was weird being outdoors in San Francisco eating outdoors at 8:30p.m on Fog Region !!
